Free Automotive Class in Minneapolis
The Lift Garage’s Car Care Class is a free resource for community members who want to learn more about cars. Whether you’re interested in becoming a mechanic, a new driver, or simply wanting a refresher, this class equips participants with the know-how to feel more confident on the road and under the hood.
What You’ll Learn
Car Care Basics
Our class teaches participants a basic overview of car maintenance and care, including:
- An overview of the car dashboard
- How to respond when warning lights come on
- The important of fluids and their roles in keeping a car running
In the shop, you will be able to look under the hood of a car! Here, you’ll learn how to identify where fluids go, check fluid levels and top off to the correct amount, identify basic car parts, and jump start a car battery.
Participants are required to wear closed toe shoes while in the shop.
Auto Shop Tips
Your car is ultimately your responsibility to take care of – and an auto shop will help you do that! In this class, we will discuss the importance of viewing the shop you work with as a partner in helping you take care of your car and the importance of being honest when seeking repairs or maintenance. This portion of our class includes:
- How to find a shop
- How to prepare for your appointment
- How to follow up with the shop if something goes wrong afterwards
Used Car Insights
Buying a used car is a big purchase that requires research and planning. In our class, you’ll learn:
- The most important information to know when shopping for a used car
- What questions you should ask the seller
- How to identify other investments – like possible repairs – a used car may have

If you drive a car, are looking to purchase a car, or are interested in working on cars, then this class is for you! This class is especially beneficial for those thinking about going into an automotive career but would like to get a sneak-peek into a garage first. Automotive career opportunities include auto mechanics, auto technicians, specialized repair, detailing, and more.

A portion of the class is in our garage. In the garage, we require closed toed shoes. We recommend wearing moderately tight clothing and things you wouldn’t mind getting oil or other stains on.
Yes, participants may take pictures while in class! However, we ask that you do not take pictures that show the license plates of the cars being worked on in our shop.
