Position Description:
While the ideal applicant for this position is a trained and skilled automotive technician, applicants should also be able to prioritize tasks, balance multiple needs and practice clear and respectful communication. Technicians are not required to have ASE certifications at hire, but employees are expected to achieve two certifications per year in their first two years, and testing fees are paid for by the organization.
Job Duties:
- Perform vehicle inspections focused on safety and drivability, and responding thoroughly to customer’s service requests. Complete Pre-Purchase Inspections and Inspections in the shop as needed.
- Perform vehicle electrical and mechanical diagnostics and repairs in shop (no collision/body, transmission, or heavy-duty engine repair).
- Provide thorough, clear, and honest written and verbal documentation about inspection findings, recommended car repairs and possible challenges to repair, and/or when vehicle is not worth investment.
- Responsible for a clean work area and maintaining a clean, organized, safe shared shop space (including mobile van).
- Assist Lead Technician and Shop Manager with regular and preventative maintenance of shop equipment, including shop vans, and assist other Technicians with repairs as possible or when requested.
- Follow all applicable local, state and federal laws regarding hazardous waste, motor vehicle operation, etc.
- Attend organization-wide fundraising events and assist with special events as requested.
Required Qualification and Skills:
- Education and/or experience in auto repair; ability to complete repairs for an 8-hour shift and a willingness to work outside, sometimes in the elements.
- Ability to work independently and with teammates, prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
- Practice conflict resolution, effective listening and communication skills.
- Valid MN driver’s license without major infractions is required.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
- ASE Certifications are preferred but not required at hire; employees are expected to achieve 2 employer paid certifications per year, and employees can earn incentive pay on top of hourly wage for acquiring ASE Certifications.
- Experience with conflict resolution preferred.
Position Details:
Schedule: Typical workdays are Monday-Friday, hours are flexible although typically between 8:00am and 5:00pm. Occasional evenings and weekends may be expected.
Location: Minneapolis, MN. This position is an on-site position.
Classification and Wage: Full-time, hourly/non-exempt position with a starting/probationary hourly rate of $26.27/hour. After the probationary period, technicians are paid an hourly rate that is determined based on quarterly average billable hours and ASE certifications – pay can range from $26.27 to $37.22.
Full-time benefits: Paid holidays (10 days/year), paid vacations (15 days the first year), and sick time off (10 days/year). Retirement savings include an employer contribution (non-match, vested immediately) of 4% to a 403b. Mileage/travel will be reimbursed at the government rate.
